Evgeny Korolev def. Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 7-6
Evgeny Korolev secured a quarterfinal-round berth in Houston on Thursday afternoon, defeating Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain. The Russian started the match quickly, jumping out to a 3-2 lead in the first set. Korolev failed to keep the break advantage, surrendering serve at 4-2 on a double fault. The 21-year-old regrouped, snagging a second break of the Gimeno-Traver serve in the next game before eventually closing the set 6-3. A highly-contested second set ended in a tiebreak, with the world No. 83 reaching 5-0 behind a handful of mini-breaks. Korolev, who won a solid 85% of his first serves in the contest, secured a place in the quarterfinals on his fifth match point. Korolev will take on Guillermo Cañas in the next round.
Tommy Haas def. Marcel Granollers 4-6, 6-2, 6-3
Tommy Haas rallied from a set down in his second-round match, dismissing defending champion and sixth seed Marcel Granollers. The veteran German wildcard played a near-perfect second set, winning 90% of his first-serve points and securing two breaks of the Spaniard’s serve. The defending champion looked to turn the tide, breaking immediately in set three to lead 2-1. A shaky Granollers managed to save two break points at 3-4, but could not fight off a third, handing Haas a lead late in the set. The German, who clocked three aces in the set, closed out the third set 6-3. Haas faces compatriot Bjorn Phau in the quarterfinals.

Cañas twice built a two-break lead, reaching 4-0 in both the first and second sets. Cañas converted five of 11 break points in the match, winning 22 of 26 points on his first serve.
