Tennis is heading for a sponsorship showdown in London this autumn with the new ATP Finals set to challenge the traditional senior event at the Royal Albert Hall for scarce sponsorship dollars in the troubled world economy.
With the move of its season-ending finale from Shanghai to Docklands in the east of the capital, the ATP is making a huge play as the pre-Christmas sporting event of choice for Other Peoples Money, with companies now forced to decide between the two competing events, which fall within just a few weeks of each other.
The senior event, formerly sponsored by an American financial house, looks to be coming up short in the early going, through organizers of the old boys are far from giving up. They've already announced the signing of former Wimbledon winner rivals Goran Ivanisevic and Swede Stefan Edberg into their December 1-6 field.
Both the Croat and the Swede have played at the event once before - Ivanisevic in 2006 when he reached the final, and Edberg last year.
Ivanisevic, who lost to Paul Haarhuis in the 2006 final, is desperate to return after missing out because of a knee injury last year. "I have to get back the Royal Albert Hall," said Ivanisevic. "It's a fantastic place to play tennis in and I want to have that feeling again."
