Houston - Melzer and Chardy sent packing, Hewitt advances Tournament seeds Jurgen Melzer and Jeremy Chardy crashed out of the US Clay Court Championships on Wednesday. Lleyton Hewitt won his match over Sergio Roitman, securing a place in the quarterfinals.

Wayne Odesnik def. Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-0

American Wayne Odesnik turned in a solid second-round performance Wednesday afternoon, dismissing third seed Jurgen Melzer. The American snagged a break of serve at 4-4, striking an ace on set point to close, 6-4. The Austrian failed to regroup in the second set, losing eight consecutive games. Odesnik, who did not face a break point in set two, broke the Melzer serve three times in the set. The American, a 2008 semifinalist in Houston, finished the match with near-perfect 15 for 16 on his second service points. Odesnik will take on compatriot John Isner in the quarterfinal round.

    Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-0

Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez needed only 58 minutes to deliver a comprehensive defeat to an ailing fourth seed Jeremy Chardy of France. Chardy, unable to convert two break point chances at 1-0 in the first set, dropped 12 games in a row. An error-prone Frenchman hit five costly double faults, managing to win only 26% of his first service points and 25% on second serve. Garcia-Lopez secured six of 13 break point opportunities, capturing 16 of 22 his first serve points. The Spaniard faces Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals.

Lleyton Hewitt def. Sergio Roitman 6-1, 6-3

Former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt survived a few hiccups on serve to book a place in the Houston quarterfinals. The veteran Australian scored a 57-minute victory over Argentine Sergio Roitman Wednesday evening. Hewitt jumped out to a two-break lead in the first set, winning 82% of his points on first serve. The two-time Grand Slam champion relinquished one of the breaks, turning in a sloppy game at 4-0, but managed to close quickly on some solid play from the baseline. Roitman, snagging a break of serve on a double fault from Hewitt, brought the second set to parity after falling behind 0-3. Hewitt steadied himself quickly, breaking back in the next game to lead, 4-3. A seventh break of the Roitman serve sealed the set for Hewitt, 6-3.
