  • Serra, Hanescu advance at Grand Prix Hassan II

    4/7/09 1:15 AM | Ricky Dimon
Serra, Hanescu advance at Grand Prix Hassan II Florent Serra defeats Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets on Monday afternoon to reach the Casablanca second round. He is joined there by Victor Hanescu.

    Florent Serra d. Thomaz Bellucci 6-3, 6-3

Seeded fifth at the Grand Prix Hassan II, Serra made a routine start to his week in Casablanca with a straight-set win over Bellucci. Serra needed just one hour and 17 minutes to reach the second round, where he will meet either Olivier Rochus or Moroccan wildcard Mehdi Ziadi. Serra broke twice in the first set and only gave one break back, serving it out at 5-3. Bellucci was even more hopeless in the second set, winning a mere four points in four return games. Again the 21-year-old Brazilian surrendered serve on two occasions despite putting in 75 percent of his first offerings. Bellucci's stellar baseline game normally works well on clay, as it did on the Challenger circuit in 2007 and earlier this year in Costa Do Sauiper, where he treated Brazilian fans to a runner-up finish at the ATP level. On Monday, however, Bellucci was no match for Serra's aggressive play and stellar all-court game. The Frenchman recorded five aces and just one double-fault in the victory.

    Victor Hanescu d. Steve Darcis 6-4, 7-5

In a match that featured plenty of momentum swings especially considering it lasted just two sets, Hanescu finished off Darcis in one hour and 38 minutes to reach the Casablanca second round. The 6'6'' Romanian went up an early break in the first set, but he gave it back while serving for the set at 5-3. Darcis, however, could not capitalize on the opportunity and he went down 0-40 on his own serve at 4-5. Hanescu capitalized on his second set point to take it 6-4. Seemingly unable to play from ahead, Hanescu quickly fell behind by a break in the second frame of play. But the 5'10'' Belgian could not hold on and let his opponent back in it as the set progressed to 5-5. Hanescu held and followed that up with his fourth break of the match to close things out 6-4, 7-5. Next up for the world No. 39 is Ivan Navarro, who led his opener by a set and a break when Sergiy Stakhovsky retired.
