Jurgen Melzer and Evgeny Korolev each made a successful first-round start at the US Clay Court Championships on Monday. Eighth seed Maximo Gonzalez fell to unseeded Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Melzer def. Kendrick 6-1, 7-5
Third seed Jurgen Melzer eased into the second round in Houston, defeating American Robert Kendrick in straight sets Monday afternoon. The Austrian broke multiple times during the 67-minute contest, converting six of nine break point chances. Melzer enjoyed a solid day on serve as well, winning 73% of his first service points. The world No. 31 will face American Wayne Odesnik in the second round.
Korolev def. Mayer 7-6, 2-6, 7-5
Russian Evgeny Korolev survived a two-hour and 32-minute thriller in round one on Monday, dismissing Argentine Leonardo Mayer. Korolev, who won a dismal 22 of 54 points on second serve, battled through a handful of costly double faults, saving 10 of 14 break-point chances. The 21-year-old returned serve well throughout the match, securing three breaks of the Mayer serve. Korolev meets Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the second round.
Gimeno-Traver def. Gonzalez 6-4, 3-6, 6-1
Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver knocked out eighth-seeded Argentine Maximo Gonzalez late Monday night. Gimeno-Traver survived a two-hour and 10-minute battle with the wily Gonzalez, snagging the contest on his third match point opportunity. The Spaniard managed to weather several spotty patches of play in the second set, converting just one of six break-point chances. Gimeno-Traver regrouped well in the third set, winning a key 10 of 13 points on his second serve.
