Juan Carlos Ferrero makes quick work of Christophe Rochus on Tuesday afternoon in Casablanca. Next up for Ferrero is Potito Starace.
Once No. 1 in the world and now outside the Top 100, Juan Carlos Ferrero showed on Tuesday what he can still do when healthy. The oft-injured Spaniard crushed Christophe Rochus 6-2, 6-3 in just one hour and one minute to reach the second round of the Grand Prix Hassan II in Casablanca, Morocco.
Ferrero has been in poor form on the hard courts this season, but on his favorite surface--clay--he reached quarterfinals in both Costa Do Sauipe and Buenos Aires back in February. On the dirt of Casablanca, he came out blazing and outclassed Rochus in every aspect of the game throughout the first set. Ferrero put in 73 percent of his first serves, saved one break point, and took advantage of his opponent's second serves for two breaks.
After serving out the opening frame of play at 5-2, Ferrero seized a quick break for 2-1 in the second and never looked back. The 2003 French Open champion consolidated the break en route to a 5-3 lead. A final break of Rochus ensured that Ferrero would not even have to serve the match out himself. The world No. 115 added five more aces and continued to jump all over the 5'7'' Belgian's second deliveries, winning 13 of 17 second-serve return points in set two.
Next up for Ferrero is Potito Starace, a three-set winner over Oscar Hernandez on Tuesday. Ferrero and Starace have squared off on four previous occasions--all on clay--and Ferrero leads the head-to-head series 3-1. Starace, however, won their most recent meeting in the spring of 2007 at the Masters Series Rome.
