    Houston - Melzer, Gonzalez and Korolev highlight modest Day 1 Jurgen Melzer, Maximo Gonzalez and Evgeny Korolev are set to kick off the action at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston, Texas on Monday.

    Jurgen Melzer vs. Robert Kendrick

    Third seed Jurgen Melzer of Austria will battle American Robert Kendrick in round one on Monday afternoon. Melzer, ranked 32nd in the world, makes his sixth trip to Houston. The Austrian made the finals in 2006, losing to American Mardy Fish. The 28-year-old comes into the event a disappointing 4-9 for 2009, yet to move beyond the round of 16 in eight tournaments entered. World No. 85 Kendrick, a three times a participant in Houston, reached the round of 16 in 2004. Melzer and Kendrick have never played one another.

    Maximo Gonzalez vs. Daniel Gimeno-Traver

    Eighth seed Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina meets Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the first round of play Monday night. The 75th-ranked Argentine, 3-2 at the ATP World Tour level in 2009, has enjoyed success on the Challenger Circuit, winning two events on clay. The Tandil native makes his debut in Houston against world No. 79 Gimeno-Traver. The Spaniard made a positive start to the year, reaching the round of 16 in Vina del Mar and Buenos Aires, and the quarterfinal round in Acapulco. Gonzalez and Gimeno-Traver have never played an ATP World Tour level match.

    Evgeny Korolev vs. Leonardo Mayer

    Talented 21-year-old Russian Evgeny Korolev will take on Argentine Leonardo Mayer in round one late Monday evening. Korolev reached the 2009 finals of Delray Beach in February, losing to American Mardy Fish 7-5, 6-3. The world No. 84, a respectable 6-4 for the year, makes his debut in Houston. Mayer, ranked 94th in the world, comes to the event with three wins and two losses, reaching the round of 16 in Johannesburg and the quarters of Acapulco. Monday evening’s matchup marks the first meeting between the Russian and the Argentine.
