Mark Philippoussis has finally thrown in the towel on his failed attempts to return to tennis, with the 32-year-old now living back at his childhood home of Melbourne.
Long gone are the American playgrounds of Miami and Las Vegas, which for years served as entertainment rather than training bases for a man considered one of world's biggest wastes of tennis talent.
The one-time world No. 8, who played Wimbledon and US Open finals, has finally stopped kidding himself that his pair of patched-together knees will ever be enough to compete again on the ATP.
Philippoussis has set up home in the waterside Williamstown suburb where he grew up and where his mother still lives. "I want to stay in Williamstown because I love it," he said.
"Everyone that I care about is here. The reason I was living in America was because when I played tournaments it was easy to be based there. I could go from tournament to tournament and have a week off but now that I'm not playing tournaments I just wanted to come home."
Philippoussis was reportedly dabbling in real estate last year before the full effect of the world economic crisis hit.
