  • Karlovic ousted, Ferrer and Cilic move through

    3/30/09 2:11 AM | Cheryl Murray
Karlovic ousted, Ferrer and Cilic move through Qualifier Frederico Gil upset the No. 26 seed Ivo Karlovic for an opportunity to face Rafael Nadal in the third round. Joining Gil in the third round are David Ferrer and Marin Cilic.

Frederico Gil def. Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 6-4

Portugal’s Frederico Gil stunned towering Croat Ivo Karlovic in straight sets on Saturday. Karlovic, who stands at 6 feet 10 inches tall (208 cm), has made his tennis living on the strength of his first serve. When that shot is not working perfectly, the Croat is vulnerable – as he was on Saturday. Karlovic’s first serve hovered at 59%, but he faced an unusual number of break point chances (12). He was able to fight off all but three, however his return game is not sufficient enough to weather three breaks of serve. Gil will face Rafael Nadal in the third round.

David Ferrer def. John Isner 6-3, 3-6, 6-2

Spain’s David Ferrer cruised easily enough through the first set of his match against American qualifier John Isner. The Spaniard weathered 5 aces and a 74% first serve percentage from Isner in the opening set to take a single break of serve advantage. Ferrer faced 2 break points of his own, but managed to fight them off. Isner came roaring back in the second set. The Spaniard’s sometimes spotty serve deserted him a bit and the American was able to pocket two breaks of serve and level the match at one set all. Ferrer re-found his form in the third set, however. A single break of Isner’s serve was enough to get a pass to the third round.

Marin Cilic def. Amer Delic 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-3

Amer Delic put up a good fight against the No. 17 seed Marin Cilic. Delic, a young American qualifier, was unable to gain much ground in the opening set. Cilic served at a dismal 34%, but Delic was still unable to earn even a single break point. The American battled bravely in the second set, however. Delic was broken twice, but he also broke Cilic two times to force a tiebreaker. Delic won a tight tie-breaker to force a third set, but he could not keep pace with Cilic, who closed out the match with a single break of serve.
