Top seeds Gilles Simon and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga continued their winning ways at the Sony Ericsson Open, moving safely into the round of 16 on Sunday. James Blake went down to Tomas Berdych late Sunday night.
Gilles Simon def. Rainer Schuettler 3-6, 6-1, 6-1
The World No. 8 rallied from a set down against 32-year-old German veteran Rainer Schuettler in their third round match Sunday afternoon. Simon struggled to hold serve throughout the match, but managed to win 10 consecutive games after falling a break down in the second set. Despite turning in a poor 48% of first serves made, the Frenchman enjoyed a decent returning day, converting seven for 11 break point opportunities. Simon faces countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the round of 16 on Tuesday. Tsonga dismissed American Robert Kendrick in round three.

Tenth seed Tsonga, looking solid in his third round encounter, defeated the American qualifier without facing a break point Sunday afternoon. The World No. 11 kept his composure through a 35-minute stoppage of play, striking 11 aces and 26 winners in the contest. Tsonga treated the crowd in Miami to another stellar serving day, capturing 37 of 43 his first service points. The hard-hitting Frenchman, yet to drop a set at the Sony Ericsson Open, will battle countryman Gilles Simon in the round of 16. Simon posted a hard-fought victory over 29th seed Rainer Schuettler.
Tomas Berdych def. James Blake 6-4, 6-7, 6-3
Tomas Berdych battled his way into the final 16, defeating 13th seed James Blake in two-hour and 22 minute match. The Czech, seeded 21st in the tournament survived moments of patchy play, converting a dismal three of 12 break point chances. An erratic Blake rallied from a set down to even the match, winning a second-set tiebreak, but failed to keep his unforced error count in check. The American, twice a quarterfinalist at the Sony Ericsson Open, struck 49 errors in the contest. Berdych will take to the court against World No. 3 Novak Djokovic on Tuesday. Djokovic easily moved through to the round of 16, dismantling Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in straight sets Sunday night.
