Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic took three sets to get past Jose Acasuso of Argentina in opening round action on Thurday in Miami.
Janko Tipsarevic and Jose Acasuso are almost evenly ranked; the Serb is No. 46 in the world, while Acasuso is 42nd. Tipsarevic accrues his ranking points on faster surfaces, where his serve is more effective. The Argentine, on the other hand, is a baseline grinder who plays his best tennis on the red clay, and Thursday’s match reflected each player’s surface preference.
Tipsarevic played a clean first set of his first-round match. He breezed through it without a break point against him and kicked in six aces for good measure. Acasuso’s first serve percentage, which dipped to 43% in the opening set, did not help his cause either. Tipsarevic sealed up the set with one break of serve to take the early match lead.
The Serb’s serving declined in the middle set of the match. He hit just one ace (two less than Acasuso) for the set and was broken twice as the Argentine returned the favor and pocketed the second set. Tipsarevic continued to have problems on serve in the third set. His first-serve percentage dropped to a shocking 30%, but Acasuso was unable to take advantage of the many second serves. Tipsarevic converted two more break points in the third to take the match.
