  • Roadblocks abound for Murray at Masters Series Miami

    3/24/09 5:42 PM | Ricky Dimon
Roadblocks abound for Murray at Masters Series Miami Andy Murray has been the undisputed second best player in the world this season, but the Sony Ericsson Open draw did not treat him as such. Both David Nalbandian and Fernando Verdasco are in Murray's quarter.

Andy Murray has already appeared in three ATP finals this year--and won two--but if he has aspirations of making it to a fourth, he will have to navigate a brutal quarter of the Sony Ericsson Open draw.

Murray will open his bid to succeed Nikolay Davydenko as Masters Series Miami champion against either Juan Monaco or Marc Gicquel. The Scot could meet No. 28 seed Mardy Fish after that. Murray should be able to take care of those opponents, but Fish can be dangerous on hard courts (last season he was the runner-up in Indian Wells and reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals, and he won a title in Delray Beach earlier this year).

Round four is where things could get especially taxing for Murray. Potential opponents include Richard Gasquet and David Nalbandian. Although the Frenchman has been slumping, Gasquet is 2-1 head-to-head against Murray and would be 3-0 if he had been able to serve out last summer's memorable Wimbledon encounter in the third set. Nalbandian is also far from his best form at the moment, but the Argentine is 2-0 against Murray and he held five match points against eventual champion Rafael Nadal last week in Indian Wells.

If Murray makes it safely through to the Miami quarterfinals, he will most likely meet either Radek Stepanek or Fernando Verdasco. Along with Murray, Stepanek and Verdasco are two of the hottest players in men's tennis right now. Stepanek has already captured two titles this season; in Brisbane and San Jose. Verdasco captivated the tennis world with a remarkable run to the Australian Open semis and a memorable five-set epic semifinal against Nadal. The Spaniard missed some time with a foot problem, but returned in Indian Wells and reached the quarterfinals before falling to Federer.

The world No. 4 should be able to advance out of this quarter if he plays like he has been throughout the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009, but the recipe for an upset is in place. If the hard courts of Miami are playing relatively fast, Nalbandian could knock him out; if they are playing relatively slow, watch out for Verdasco.

Yep, it's gonna be hard for muzz, right in the corner of his very own skeleton closet.

If Muzz meet Nadal in the semi-final, I think Muzz will win because his draw is tough which means he will be more alert when he reaches the semi-final. A tough draw will make a player being used to high-level of tennis play but also can make the player tired.

torres9, i'm sure you are aware that tough draws are a part of tennis, but your comment jogged my memory of how many times we have watched nadal battled tough draws to get to where he is. personally, i expect top players to have tough draws occasionally and they do. what better way is there to measure how good a player really is. you certainly can't measure it by a player breezing through an easy draw. if andy wants to make his mark on tennis by reaching his goal of #1 ranking, he has to earn it, just like federer, just like nadal. fighting through tough draws, proving that he can handle it, is a major part of getting to the top. there are no free passes! look at it this way, if perhaps he makes it to the semifinal and is tired when he gets there, remember he won't be the first player to be tired and he certainly won't be the last!

memi: this article is about Muzz having a tough draw. I dunno what I said to offend you.

torres9 , 3/25/09 4:35 AM

torres9, i actually thought i was making a comment about tough draws; in other words, i elaborated on what you said. forgive me if i'm surprised that you thought i was offended! why on earth would i be offended? i may be a little confused by your interpretation of my thoughts, but i assure you, i'm not offended.

OK... my bad then.. I am too used to Nadal fans defending Nadal so forgive me.,

Ricky, been thinking about his draw and I agree that Muzz does a tough draw. But I believe he is in good form after IW and can get thro Stepanek and Verdasco (verdasco was hurting post AO; coulda added insult to injury by going against Dr's orders). looking forward to different court conditions in a match with the world #1. Definitely one of the best match-ups to watch in Miami.

I think memi is right about hard tournaments, they will make a man of Murray if he sticks to the task. His consistency this year has been pretty good so far and if he gets past Gasquet and Nalbandian he should be in with a real chance with Nadal despite any tiredness. Apart from his bad language I am quite a Muzza fan as I come from Scotland myself. He is the only player coming from the British Isles who really has the fire power to win big events and I really hope he can keep it up.

Rasjid , 3/26/09 2:16 PM

Hear! Hear! Rasjid. It's been a long time coming....And at least the bad language was said to himself.

deuce , 3/28/09 4:02 PM

torres9, you're right, i'm one nadal fan who always defends rafa, but in a deliberate fair manner. needless to say, he's not perfect, but he's my choice of favorite player since the first time i saw him play a few years ago. i'm just one in thousands of fans who try to make sure nadal gets credit for the hard work he has put in and his incredible achievements. i'm not doing anything different from what federer fans did when federer was dominating and they are still doing today. at times, my thoughts may sound harsh and lacking objectivity, but it's just that i'm not one to beat around the bush. nonetheless, my intention is not to take away or diminish another player's merit; my intention is to tell it like it is!
