  • Federer "old" in loss to Murray

    3/22/09 6:05 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer "old" in loss to Murray Roger Federer referred to himself as "old" following his semifinal loss to Andy Murray at the Masters Series Indian Wells on Saturday. Murray advances to play Rafael Nadal.

Andy Murray beat Roger Federer for the fourth straight time on Saturday afternoon, prevailing 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open. Federer's third-set meltdown invoked memories of the 2009 Australian Open final, in which the world No. 2 fell to Rafael Nadal 6-2 in the fifth set.

Whereas Federer broke down in tears following that epic encounter, this time the Swiss composed himself and did his best to explain the loss to Murray, against whom he is now 2-6.

“I’m old, he’s young," noted Federer, six years Murray's elder at 27. "Makes a huge difference."

Federer went on to use the term "shocking" in describing his third-set performance. "I think in the last few matches I always felt Andy came on strong as the match went on. This time was different. I think I played well in the second, forced the issue a bit more, and then I played a shocking third set."

The 13-time Grand Slam champion, however, made sure to give credit to Murray for seizing victory. "He played unbelievable in the end," Federer said. "He’s a great counter-puncher and reads the game really well. He has great feel. So he’s very confident at the moment. You can tell, the way he plays. He knows he doesn’t have to play close to the lines because he can cover the court really well. I think that calms him down mentally. I think that is why he’s playing so well."

Murray will take on Nadal, a straight-set winner over Andy Roddick, in Sunday's Indian Wells title match. Federer now moves on to Miami, where he was upset by Roddick in last year's quarterfinals.

king crybaby and his pathetic excuses.
he got outplayed by a better player, simple as that.
federer needs to take his humble pie and eat it.

:))))

Interesting he said he was "old" because Andy Roddick must be about the same age, isn't he and is suddenly improving his game and nobody is scoffing and calling him too "old". Perhaps Federer feels "old" as a champion?
sheila: Murray is my favourite but you are talking about one of the most amazing players who dominated the game for 5 years. I really don't think "cry baby" is quite the right word.

deuce , 3/22/09 7:52 AM

accusations of giving excuses are coming from Nadal fans/admirers..so no surprises there.I read that part of the interview. Now I dont know whether Roger was just sarcastic or serious.Either way,he has a point.Like I said Roger's had a great transition game over the years and that seems to be down lately.Even after winning against Verdasco Roger wasnt happy with his match and I can see why.
Nevertheless I hope he does regroup .There's always a next time . I just hope he can get over these lapses of concentration because they're occuring more often than not. Also I hope he does something about the back as his first serve percentage and amount of double faults isnt helping.

janhavi , 3/22/09 8:17 AM

"The 13-time Grand Slam champion, however, made sure to give credit to Murray for seizing victory."

i watched the interview ....i dont get it ...fed said in clear english that Murray played better ... and still people jump all over him for giving excuses..that was not an excuse .........i wonder what answer would suffice ? i mean i hate the ass pickers guts with all my heart n soul ( no offense to his fans) , but i think when he looses and says i lost ... we acknowledge that and move on .

fedexfan , 3/22/09 8:52 AM

Federer has finally stopped slagging Murray of and accepted that Murray beat him because he is better. I buy the 'old' excuse, there is no doubt that the game has moved on since Roger dominated it.

Roger is beyond coaching now, he is too set in his ways to change, I think he should retire garcefully whilst everyone thinks he is a great player. GOAT? I don't think so.

GO GO RAFA!!!!!

So much for the poll which had Federer and Djokovic 1st and 2nd. Please stop doing these pointless polls.

livingdoll , 3/22/09 9:10 AM

No doubt that Rafa is better player atm than Roger. But the fact is Roger has achieved something (13slams till date) that Rafa is yet to get.And he is still 7 behind to him.So till Rafa reaches that mark(13+slams) Roger will be called superior to him(not in case of H2H).But u know what Future is always uncertain & its possible that Rafa will not get 13 slams or even 7 th or 8th.Isn't it ?????

In case of Roger He is the GOAT.As there can be multiple players who can be called GOAT.And I feel Roger & Sampras are of them.

Don't worry Roger we (fans) will remain loyal forever, at least me.Keep Going Roger It was not a bad tourney at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!

tomnjerry2 , 3/22/09 9:27 AM

How can multiple players be 'the' GOAT for heaven's sake.

livingdoll , 3/22/09 9:45 AM

The concept of GOAT is a farce , it doesnt exist.
E.g Who is the current GOAT unanimously.

nirv02 , 3/22/09 9:52 AM

Livingdoll.....read the FULL transcript about what Federer ACTUALLY said about Murray. Also...when he said 'Old'...he said it with a smile (videoclip).....Media do take things out of context and he is 'OLDER' than Murray. he can't change his birth certificate, but he can change his tennis. Plus YOU are bringing up crybaby again. Can't you grow up? I mean, did you see the slam rugby yesterday? 11 grown men, welsh, crying in front of the cameras because they lost...It's what men do!!!!!...when they are PASSIONATE about their sport.......Now Fed was HUGELY complimentary about Murray. He really was, and rightly so. Andy played an awesome tennis match. Fed recognised that he was the better player. That shows humility and acceptance. Now you need to taste some of your own pie.....Try a piece. How does it feel? Yummy?...........Give the guy a break. He is and will always be an amazing tennis player for the sport. He may not be the player he was when he dominated for almost five years....but I'll go along with the tennis EXPERTS, one of them being Mark Petchey, that Federer IS the best player of this generation of tennis players. Without him, Tennis would have been so much less exciting that it is. There have been a lot of players who turned professional at the same time as Fed, BUT NONE OF THEM have won 13 grand slams. No comparison.

malteser1 , 3/22/09 10:18 AM

tomnjerry, it's hurting isn't it, be careful next time when you say a word about Novak, cause your loving one lost from Murray wh's beaten him 5 times so far, now he's old, so if he is old, then he should retired, don't you think so, just an crying baby, nothing else, it's a lesson for him, cause all the time, he has something to 'say' about Nole, now WHAT, what goes around, comes around, Murray is a great player, congratulation to him, but Nadal is beyond the story, no one's perfect, but him...

gordana , 3/22/09 11:35 AM

Federer is awesome, incredible, when he concentrate... I mean, his play is smart, but the lacking of concentration is frustrating.
Roddick have been improving his play a lot lately and i think Federer should do the same, and not make excuses for a lost, i mean, a lost is a lost, and that's how it is!

I believe that Federer should need to feel the fire of competition again, like when he was younger.
To be a Champion, you always need to feel that fire and don't feel any excess of confidence against ANY player! doesn't matter if it is younger than you or have any kind of weird looking, you need to always be focus into giving the best of you no matter what.

I can say i was and AM a fan of Federer and his play style, and like malteser1 said, without him, Tennis would have been so much less exciting that it is! So i really want him to come back, even better that he was back when he began being the 1st of the world.

Ariel , 3/22/09 3:12 PM

WTF ? Federer giving the age thing as an excuse is the last thing i expected from him.

I remember a GREAT player who one day started mentioning the age thing and a couple of months later suddenly retired.
Yeah... that player is Justine Henin. Mmmm....

Emiliano55 , 3/22/09 3:19 PM

^ Emiliano ,Andrew Burton asked him that question and wrote in his blog( or rather Bodo's blog) that it was a joke.Federer smiled after saying that.He wasnt serious about it.And even if he was,its a fact.Dosent mean he's going to retire the next moment. It comes down to motivation in the end.

janhavi , 3/22/09 3:30 PM

Where is torres, why is he not ON A ROLL HERE to help his fellow Federer fans!!!

We are biased with our accusations of Roger giving excuses. But SOMEONE isn't in denial by always finding excuses on his behalf! Not using the TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT excuse this time?

Federer should retire. That way the excuses will stop and the tennis world would be a happier place. Or choke on that humble pie generously provided by Sheila. Than he would REALLY have an excuse. So I hope what you are alluding to Emiliano comes true SOON because I'm Tired of him and MOST his aggressive fans. See how quiet the board is when most of them are gone!!! Isn't it nice??

remi , 3/22/09 4:16 PM

ROFL X 100..

janhavi , 3/22/09 4:31 PM

Oh, please! Roger got beat. He gave credit to Andy, with compliments. Roger haters will find fault no matter what. Roger fans will always stand behind him - that must bother you incredibly :). We don't begrudge you your fandom, but when your player of choice rises to the heights of Roger's success, then you can pile on. So there.

Rafterfan , 3/22/09 5:45 PM

I think most people are having a problem finding something to critisize roger on now . HEnce the enourmous outpour of dumbass remarks . and this fed retiring talk ...oh god ....drop it already..thats u hoping he does ...hoping he stops at 13 ...hoping .....that soooo aint gona happen ...and we fed fans stick by him through his up's and down's .....

fedexfan , 3/22/09 6:16 PM

Hear Hear! Rafterfan and Fedexfan. Federer has proved all his haters wrong by complimenting murray, complimenting nadal and accepting that he played a 'shocking' third set. Murray deserved to win. He did. Move on....

malteser1 , 3/22/09 7:41 PM

isn't losing part of the game of sports?
i missed the match but saw a little of it later. my first thought watching was what the heck was RF playing? like he was lazy or tired or no mood or something like that.... guess i didn't miss much.

kazuo , 3/22/09 8:04 PM

Holy Macaroni! One need only to be a tennis fan hailing from where I do, where nobody cares about tennis this time of year to really appreciate the fury hurling clash of opinions here! Let r rip!

zoey234 , 3/22/09 8:43 PM

Federer has been less than complimentary to Murray in recent times and was totally lacking in sincerity in his comments after the match. I think he is gutted that Murray has the ability to turn the greatest player's one major flaw against him (backhand) and punish him until he concedes mentally, just as he did in the 3rd set. Andy Murray all the way ;)

Bundy , 3/22/09 8:48 PM

I am a Rafa fan and I am used to Roger's excuses, but I'm sorry. Roger didn't make any excuses in the full presser (which some have obviously not read). When he said he was old, he was making a sarcastic comment because later someone else asked him if he felt old since he said that and he laughed and said no. Roger also said "the better player won." He made no criticisms of Murray, only of his own self and his game. He was very complimentary of Murray and his game. I've complained about his backhanded compliments before, but this is NOT one of those times that Roger did that.

fan4tennis , 3/22/09 9:49 PM

What is wrong mentioning what is obviously true? He is definitely older than the other guys in the top 4. And is it not true that young people have more energy than an older guy?

Murray interview can be viewed arrogant if you take it the wrong way. He said he knows how to beat Nadal and mentioned that he had beaten Nadal in his last 2 meetings so he has a good chance. Obviously he said that just to show confidence.

I like how Murray admitted how approached his game against Fed which is just to keep the ball in play and mix it up in pace and direction. Murray is a very good student of the game.

torres9 , 3/22/09 11:52 PM

torres9, my post was not critical of Fed. I just felt that Roger was NOT using age as an excuse and if you read the FULL presser, you can come to that conclusion quite easily.
As most know by now, after Andy fell, Roger seem to falter after that. It was probably just as confusing to Roger as it was to those watching, even the non-Fed fans. I was in a Rafa cheering thread (waiting for the Rafa-Roddick match to start) and even the Rafa fans there were perplexed. For some of us, it was hard to watch. Not all Rafa fans are Fed-haters. The closest to an explanation we thought was a loss of focus. Age never entered the equation. Fed obviously thought so too since when asked if he felt old, he said no. When he made the comment about him being old and Murray being young, he was trying to be funny and sarcastic.

fan4tennis , 3/23/09 1:28 AM

Federer can still win against Murray if he can be little more patient during rallies though he is older. Come on Roger, you can still do it.

p66 , 3/23/09 5:06 AM

Bundy, you are totally wrong buddy. Federer was HUGELY complimentary about Murray in both video clip and transcript. Go watch and read both. I think that when you read things on a page, the way it's written can be misconstrued very easily, but when you see the image, the smile, the sincerity, you will understand that Fed actually respects Andy's gameplan.....'for a youngster'. He said a lot of positive things. So don't become a fed hater because you have misconstrued what he was trying to say......

malteser1 , 3/23/09 3:00 PM

*sigh*

Federer just doesn't find the lines the way he used to. Hopefully he can get the magic back for just TWO more slams. Just two more, Roger! =)
