  • Murray to take on Corretja for clay coaching again

    3/19/09 1:33 AM | Johan Lindahl
Murray to take on Corretja for clay coaching again Andy Murray will take a break from regular coach Miles MacLagan during the spring clay-court season, teaming for the second year in a row with Spain's former great Alex Corretja.

While the one-off pairing had little success in 2008 - Murray reached a couple of third rounds including Roland Garros - the Scot is keen for a fresh face in his revolving entourage.

"I love the work that's going on with Miles, but some weeks it is good to be apart," said the world No. 4. "I'll spend seven or eight weeks a year with Alex.

"If you're going to be on the tour for 12 years or whatever, you don't want things to get stale. Sometimes it's nice to do something different and Alex will have different ideas, different drills and it's good to keep your mind fresh."

Corretja will mix in Murray with his Spanish television commentating duties at events including Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid before the French Open. The 34-year-old Spaniard was runner-up at Roland Garros twice and reached second in the world on the ATP a decade ago.

Murray is keen that the collaboration succeed: "It worked in the clay-court season last year and I think it'll help on other courts as well. I'm not going to spend loads of time with him, but it's going to be quality time when I do."
