India plans a surface surprise for Australia when the countries meet in May in an Asian Davis Cup zonal.
Instead of picking the traditional of grass, which has served the nation for decades, the hosts will go with a hardcourt in an effort to increase their own winning chances.
The Aussies, who can count only on Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione in a pinch, will be quite comfortable on the cement. But so will India, whose top player Somdev Dev Varman, the world No. 150, reached the Chennai Open final on the surface two months ago.
Australia own 28 Davis Cup titles, but lifted their last trophy six years ago. The Aussies have not been able to return to the elite World Group for the past few seasons due to a lack of talent to back up former No. 1 Hewitt, who underwent hip surgery last summer and is not the same player who won two Grand Slams at the turn of the century.
