Andy Roddick got past Nicolas Kiefer in two tight sets Tuesday night under the lights in the Tennis Garden.
In now five attempts, Nicolas Kiefer has failed to win a set against American Andy Roddick. The German put up a good fight, especially in the second set, but Roddick once again proved too strong. Roddick played a clean first set, if a bit tentative. The American no longer seems keen to rip forehands indiscriminately. In fact, the entire complexion of his game seems to have changed since the new season started. He was able to take advantage of one weak service game from Kiefer to take a one set lead.
Kiefer played better tennis in the second set. He still was not able to make much headway against Roddick’s serve, but the German held his own serve with far more efficiency. They both held serve throughout the set to force a tiebreak. Kiefer secured the first mini-break to take a 3-1 lead, only to hand the break back with a shaky double-fault. Roddick’s serving won out in the end.
The American advances to the fourth round, where he will play Spaniard David Ferrer.
