  • Roddick rolls past Koellerer in straights

    3/16/09 3:23 PM | Cheryl Murray
Roddick rolls past Koellerer in straights With the crowd firmly behind him, Andy Roddick advanced through to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday night.

Top American Andy Roddick was utterly dominant in the opening set of his match against Austrian bad boy Daniel Koellerer. Roddick smacked 6 aces, won 100% of the points on his first serve and faced no break points. Koellerer was suffering from a large blister on his foot, and appeared to be suffering the effects.

The Austrian’s play picked up considerably in the second set. Koellerer began using drop shots quite effectively, visibly irritating Roddick. As expected, the match was not a friendly one. Koellerer seemed to enjoy goading Roddick with over-the-top celebrating whenever he won a point. Roddick retaliated by uttering expletives at the Austrian at numerous points throughout the match.

The second set was actually a closely contested affair. Roddick and Koellerer traded breaks of serve to force a tiebreaker. Once again, Roddick’s serve came to the rescue. The American capped off the match win with another expletive tossed Koellerer’s way.

Roddick will take on Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer in the third round.

Kelli must have liked this one due to the distaste of players towards each other lol.

Will Roddick have the stones to use those same expletives when he plays someone like Nadal or Federer who can humiliate him on the court? Leave the lower ranked players alone Andy.

chr18, Roddick had the stones to boycott Dubai's racism when Federer and Nadal played nicey nice because they couldn't be bothered to support a fellow player who needed it most.

Simple enuf if Crazy Dani didn't act like such a jerk Roddick wouldn't have cursed at him, no duh.

chr18 - did you see the match & the bs Dani boy was pulling? I would have clocked the guy. Andy kept his cool til the end when he let it fly after match point. No wonder this joker has been punched on court by another player & been labeled one of the dirtiest players on the circuit. There was an attempt to have him banned for the circuit altogether. Good job Andy & good riddance to Dani boy.

Actually Roddick played in Memphis the week before Dubai and he didn't want to travel that far that soon plus as an American he's probably very anti-Muslim. Didn't know that guy had been punched on court before. That's pretty interesting. I'd like to see some more of that maybe between Djokovic and Roddick.

Right on tenisbebe. Dani was acting obnxoious and he's lucky Roddick didn't deck him.

chr18, you sound like a racist and a bigot. Go play in traffic.

I don't think the guy was actually that bad. Sure, he yelled after hitting winners (generally NOT after Roddick lost a point on an error), which Roddick himself usually does, and Roddick was just frustrated with the dropshots because Koellerer was hitting them very well and won those points more than he lost them.

And as for Roddick boycotting Dubai, well, the effort was noble, but I'll highlight three points: (a) Peer ASKED other players not to, (b) Venus Williams, after winning Dubai and doing the post-match on-the-court interview, told the entire crowd how wrong it was to deny Peer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z242Wagt0js), which to me takes more guts, and finally (c) it's a 24-hour flight from Memphis to Dubai. Roddick wouldn't arrive in Dubai until Monday evening, and then would have to play the next afternoon. If Koellerer pushed Roddick to a second-set tiebreak at his most fresh, how well would he have played in his first match in Dubai?

Don't get me wrong, I like Roddick; I think he's a great player and exhibits great sportsmanship, but he can also be a bit of a diva.

Roddick a diva, lol. That's a new one. BlackCitan sounds more like a diva than Roddick.

I'll highlight three points for you: a) Roddick was defending Dubai champion and lost out on winner's points, winner's paycheck, not to mention the hefty appearance fee that true divas like Federer can't live without; b) Roddick would not have played his first match in Dubai until Wednesday so if he won Memphis on Sunday he still had time to fly over; c) Peer's comments to players were directed at the women who were already in Dubai for the tournament, not the men. In fact, everybody was surprised that a male player stood up for a WTA player, one who's not even an elite player at that.

The fact that Roddick took the lone stand against Dubai's racism showed more class, character, and cajones than the entire ATP/WTA put together. He shamed them all and Roddick's fans couldn't be prouder of him.

Next.
