The US Open looms as the next major unfulfilled dream for Rafael Nadal as the world No. 1 opens at the Indian Wells Masters.
With his French Open chances well in hand following titles at the last four editions, the Spaniard is concentrating on the one major he has never won.
"The US Open is a big goal right now," Nadal explained. "I'd love to have that, the fourth (Grand Slam title venue, making a matched set).
"But I know how tough everything is and I'm happy with my results. I'm going to continue working, but to win every tournament, it's very tough. And if you are talking about the Grand Slam, even more."
Nadal insists that he is not dreaming of duplicating the calendar-year Grand Slam sweep, last achieved in 1969 by Rod Laver. "My chances are really small," he confessed.
"What Rod Laver did was amazing," Nadal added. "But at the same time it was a little bit easier in that moment than right now, because in that moment I think they only had two different surfaces (grass and clay). Now we have three and Australia and the U.S. Open are not exactly the same."

Its not the first time i have wished him best of luck. I have never criticized Rafa & Roger in this website. But i also have not admired Rafa whenever he has played against Roger.I really like Rafa but second to Roger.
Waise mujhe sirf Djoker se nafrat hai.Aur kabhi kabhi use bhi Best Of Luck bol deta hoon.
Hope Rafa wins US Open & Roger FO this year !!!!!!! To dono ke dreams pure ho jaayenge!!!!!! Aamin.

Rafa stopped Roger after Roger won five consecutive WIMBY title !!!!!!! sixth would have been a record !!!!!!! Roger on verge of making another history of winning six consecutive US Open !!!!!!!!!!!! Rafa is on his way to create history winning five consecutive FO !!!!!! If Roger wins FO, i m pretty sure that Rafa will win US Open !!!!!!!!!
Waise mujhe bhi yeh pasand nahin ki Rafa Roger ko 6t US open jeetne se roke .........par meri yeh Tamanna (aur Roger ki bhi) hai ki RF FO jeetey !!!!!!!! Aur Rafa ki Tamanna hai ko woh US Jeetay !!!!!!!! So they can swap this time !!!!!!! lolz

I have always thought that the US Open would elude Rafa, not only because it is the last GS of the season but also because it is preceded by two HC back-to-back MS events. That's alot of HC tennis in 5 weeks, particularly for someone with such an intense, physical style of play. In addition, this means six weeks in the states which Rafa does not prefer. Traditionally he has done well at the Roger's Cup, winning it twice in 5 years whereas, with the exception of last year when he was chasing a 30+ match win streak & the number-one ranking, he has not fared so well in Cincinnati, going out in the early rounds most years.
That being said, he has show tremendous drive and determination in his career & I would love to see him conquer the Big Apple. Buena fortuna Rafa!

And i hope rafa wins 5th french !!!srry roger..lollzz...no actually i wud luv roger to brk pete's record at sum point in his career as i think he is better than pete..i know hez gona do it ..nt sure when....currently i dont want rafa's RG unbeaten run to persist..lets c if any 1 can even push hi to 5 sets at RG!!!a thing that has never been done.If roger wins US again...wow!!! 6th in a row....that is going to be a record for ages for sure..cant wait for the season to unfold....
vamosrafa , 3/16/09 2:03 AM
sorry ..mistake corrected "i want rafa's RG unbeaten run tp persist"..lol
vamosrafa , 3/16/09 2:07 AM
i want federer to win the remaining grand slams dudes
saxenanalin , 4/1/09 3:59 PM
I want Rafa to win the '09 Grand Slam period! I also want him to start chasing Pete's 14 GS record, and to continue unbeaten at RG for many years to come.
carrie , 4/1/09 4:33 PM
saxenanalin ...you echo my thoughts exactly .... i would so love him to equate pete at RG and make new record at wimby with the 15th . USO would be the cherry just to top it all off ...with another record 6th straight win...i believeeee :)

Rafa... dream big! Your dreams are coming true...tournament by tournament. Slam by slam.
Stay healthy. There is no reason why you cannot achieve a career grand slam on all the surfaces.
And this year... you have the opportunity to achieve the calendar grand slam sweep if you stay strong.
Just believe...Rafa!
funspiritman , 4/1/09 6:41 PM
right on, funspiritman! i'm reminded of a moment in 2004 when rafa was preparing to play the newly crowned #1 roger federer in miami for the first time. it was written that rafa was told that he would probably lose, but if he lost, there was no reason to feel bad because everyone loses against roger federer. in other words, it was suggested that he accept defeat before stepping on court! to make a long story short, rafa won in straights! when i reflect on that time, it is clear that rafa was unique in his thinking even then and more than that his self-belief was/is unmatched! he's not one to back away from a challenge! that's one quality that makes him exceptional! without doubt, it will definitely be the toughest task of his career, particularly with today's level of competition. so, what i say to rafa, if he can believe it, he can defy the odds! it's won't be easy, but it's not impossible!
memi , 4/1/09 7:15 PM
Memi...I agree with you 100%.
It serves no purpose for Rafa to go about bragging that he wants a career slam or a calendar slam. Just like it doesn't for The Fed to pronounce the same... This just puts unnecessary pressure on the player.
But believe me... The Fed would die to win the French! To be able to add a career slam to his resume.
And if Nadal wins Wimbledon again... he will be thinking about a career and/or calendar slam!

i know this is a very tall order considering all the terrific hard court competition, but not impossible. go for it, rafa, it's who you are, a big dreamer and a hard worker. go where few dare to go." it will be a long, tough journey, but the things we appreciate most are the most difficult to achieve! wishing you good health and continued improvement as you work toward winning in new york! vamos!
