  • Having denied Federer, Cahill coaching Verdasco

    3/15/09 4:22 AM | Ricky Dimon
Having denied Federer, Cahill coaching Verdasco One week after declining an offer to coach Roger Federer, Darren Cahill has signed with Adidas and is working with Fernando Verdasco at the Masters Series Indian Wells.

It didn't take long for esteemed ATP coach Darren Cahill to find a new gig after he decided to turn down an offer to guide Roger Federer. Cahill signed with Adidas earlier this week and will work with the company's players. He will remain based in Las Vegas while reuniting with Gil Reyes, Andre Agassi's famous trainer, who also has a deal with Adidas.

On Saturday, Cahill was present at the Masters Series Indian Wells second-round match between Thomaz Bellucci and Adidas client Fernando Verdasco. To Cahill's satisfaction, Verdasco prevailed in straight sets. The Spaniard, of course, was the breakout star at this year's Australian Open. He took out Andy Murray en route to the semifinals, where he lost a five-set instant classic to countryman Rafael Nadal.

Verdasco's talent is surely a big reason why Cahill is excited about a deal with Adidas.

"I have followed the evolution of the Adidas Player Development Program over the past three years and believe strongly in its objectives of providing world class players with an extra support team to aid their long term career planning," Cahill stated. "I am eager to get fully involved in the team and excited to renew my working relationship with Gil Reyes at home in Las Vegas."

Verdasco will now meet Richard Gasquet in a blockbuster BNP Paribas Open third-round encounter.

Whoa - what's up with Verdasco's mohawk? He looked like a rooster! I guess you can do that when you are playing phenomenal...

That clinches it. He's going straight to the top.

maybe, verdasco's new hair style is a symbol of the changes that is he making, not only with his hair, but his game as well! playing like he's been playing, there's no reason why he shouldn't soar to the top! the hairstyle, what can i say, is interesting! different strokes for different folks!

Will you look at that (Due any of you still doubt Cahill never intended more than the 9 days with Federer?) Mr. cahill not having to do a lot of traveling after all... and a bonus Fernando Verdasco in the bag to boot! LOL No doubt Fernando Verdasco will benefit greatly! Verdasco has already shown great improvements since his Las Vegas debut earlier. Verdasco will go far no doubt! I will always prefer Federer, but I like Verdasco, and Tsonga too. Cheers.
