Former French Open champion Carlos Moya has joined Lleyton Hewitt as a hip injury victim, with the Spaniard out of action this month at Indian Wells and Miami.
Moya, 32, is missing Indian Wells for the first time in his career as he grapples with the problem and awaits test results.
Moya has been a regular participant in the desert event since starting his career. He lost the final in 1999 to Mark Philippoussis. But times have changed for the veteran, who lost to qualifiers in his first two matches of 2009 and has a 25 percent winning percentage so far this season from four matches.
"I've had pains over the last few months but we were hoping that it wasn't serious and that I could resume tennis little by little," said Moya, ranked 45th. "This is a real blow, I wasn't expecting it and all, my plans are now halted. It's still too early to know when I'll be able to play again."
Moya insists that he won't risk a return to the ATP until he is 100 percent fit. Hewitt underwent a hip operation last summer, returned at the start of 2009, and played a full schedule, although he says he felt some pain during Davis Cup play in Bangkok last weekend.
