  • Federer: "I have a Rafa problem"

    3/13/09 7:11 AM | Ricky Dimon
Federer: "I have a Rafa problem" Roger Federer's announcement that he and his girlfriend are expecting their first child stole headlines on Thursday in Indian Wells. Federer, however, had time to answer questions about his tennis--and Rafael Nadal--as well.

Roger Federer's impending future as a father is the big news at the Masters Series Indian Wells at the moment, but everyone is still interested in what Federer is about to show on the tennis court, having not played since his loss to Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final.

Federer and Nadal, of course, won't run into each other again until next Sunday at the earliest (in the BNP Paribas Open final), but the Swiss is already eager for another shot at the new world No. 1.

"I don't know how much better I can play," Federer said of Nadal, who is dominating their head-to-head series 13-6. "But I'm right there and he's playing the tennis of his life. So I think for me, that's a good sign. I love playing matches against him, especially those five-setters, seeing that I can hang with him physically without a problem."

The 13-time Grand Slam champion is 2-5 against Nadal in slam finals and has lost three straight French Open title matches to the Spaniard. Roland Garros is the only Grand Slam title that eludes Federer.

Added Federer: "I don't have a problem on clay. I have a Rafa problem on clay."

For one more month, however, Federer and the rest of the ATP players will be focusing on the U.S. hard courts. Federer has at least one more day of practice--and probably answering questions about his upcoming fatherhood--before beginning his Indian Wells campaign against Marc Gicquel.

Nadal will meet either Kevin Anderson or Michael Berrer in his Indian Wells opener.

We know :)
Well...I still it's a great rivalry between them. Had Rafa not improved over the years, it would probably not have been as exciting. Would have been even better if Nole had posed more of a threat in the last 12 months - and waiting on Murray to bloom...

Finally, he said nice things for a very first time, first of all, congratulation for an upcoming fatherhood, secondly the quote of the day is his sentence: 'I have a Rafa problem on clay'! He admitted, and that's for respect...
Nadal is playing his life tennis for sure...

Roger stated a FACT>>>straight forward... no pretensions...very humbly said... this must be the sign of a FEDERER as a father. Sometimes greatness can't be achieved not by just winning titles but how you lose something and still be magnanimous in defeat.
Thumbs up for him!

I think for the first time i have heard roger uttering praise for rafa from deep inside the heart.....he has shown repsect for rafa over the past years but this time it ws a different feeling reading these lines. He is admiting that rafa is so superior on clay...improving so rapidly and is his tougest competitor ever.Signs of a true champion..he has simply augmented my respect for him... as agf25agf put it...its not always abt winning titles ..sumtimes u need to be magnanimous in defeats....tennis is so lucky to have nadal and federer!!!! Live long rafa-roger...

vamosrafa , 3/13/09 12:55 PM

i agree with what others have already said.
i have always been a fan of fed's game, but i just never liked his attitude whenever he lost.

for the most part, he has shown respect for rafa, and thats good, but this is first time ive heard him outrightly say 'rafa is just too good on clay'.

well done to rog and mirka on the baby!!!

and like vamosrafa said it perfectly, lets hope the rafa/roger rivalry continues...

redpanda , 3/13/09 1:02 PM

Is that all?
What a totally deluded man!
He is not going to beat Nadal ever again, on any surface!

noleisthebest , 3/13/09 1:40 PM

agf25agf I actually agree with you for the first time. LOL "... this must be the sign of a FEDERER as a father." I really believe this to be true as well. Admitting to a problem is also a tension releasor. I would expect Rogers' court performance will improve. Sounds like the father thing is giving him another sense of accomplishment, and as such will play a role in helping him feel more relaxed. Really looking forward to his playing. I expect a stronger Roger Federer of old. More of a challenge for Rafa, and the others. Hoping his back will not be a factor (EVER!) Cheers.

sky- nothing is better than agreeing on something out of a disagreement! Isn't it great that we see eye to eye even just this once! CHILL!

agf25agf , 3/13/09 3:43 PM

You gotta muzz problem too, Roger :) But I understand, one problem at a time.

alex , 3/13/09 5:15 PM

It's OK. He has won 13 GS with the Rafa problem. This Rafa storm shall pass sooner or later. it always does.

torres9 , 3/13/09 8:06 PM

what do u mean by this pathetic statement..."it always does"...???!!!! he hasnt face anyone like nadal..he admits it now and now nadal is near his best..(surely nt at his best) still turning the table in his favor so the future doesnt look bright for roger...tho i believe its just the matter of time before he eclipses pete's record.

vamosrafa , 3/13/09 10:20 PM

Roger, you have a Rafa problem period. Don't try to qualify it. You are yesterday's man.

livingdoll , 3/16/09 10:17 AM

living dull............is the correct user name for u !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tomnjerry2 , 3/16/09 10:39 AM

vamosrafa, I dunno why you love my comments so much. Seriously, get some anxiety pills.

torres9 , 3/16/09 10:58 AM

so many people hoping that roger just goes away. ...hahah...just shows that you are recognising that he is still a huge threat .
roger's statement was right , he has only one person that he needs to figure out on clay . its no secret ...and he said it as it is . call it humilty , pride , over confidence , mind games ...whatever ...he always says it as it is .
I hope he figures it out ...after all ...the first step to problem solving is admitting it :P

fedexfan , 3/16/09 11:02 AM

When you think about it, who doesn't have a Rafa problem on clay? Even the claycourters can't beat Rafa on clay. Roger did his best even when his game is not suited to clay and still managed to even beat Rafa on clay.

torres9 , 3/16/09 11:14 AM

so what torres?? out of 10 chances if roger beat him on clay he just followed the rule of probabilty....lol...and he didnt beat him in a slam...nadal's game is also not suited to hard courts and DEFINITELY not to grass..he has beaten roger everywhere, even in no-clay slams!!so what do u say now....!!??? roger says he is comfortable on clay becoz he grew up on clay...nadal being a spaniard also grew up on clay and amazingly his mindset ws diffrent from all othr spaniards..he worked tirelessy to adapt on hard/grass and now is the best everyhwere...he wants to win everywhere..not only on clay!!! for a spaniard to think abt winning wimby/OZ and then win th, u cant imagine how much meaningful and big an achievement this is!!!
If roger has done well to adapt to clay courts..ok welldonw roger...but rafa didnt grow up on hard/grass like roger did on clay..so whose achievement is bigger???
if any one has any common sense here...he is likely to say nadal ATLEAST in this category!
