March 12, 2009 was the first day of play in the men'ss main draw. Once again the main attraction for fans was on the practice courts.
Huge crowds, larger than some of the stadium crowds, could be seen watching the likes of Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Rafael Nadal, and Fernando Verdasco. Once the practice sessions ended, the real buzz began as fans scurried in massive queues in hopes of obtaining pictures and autographs of their heroes.
On the courts, the level of play was a bit off in terms of sharpness. Whether it was fatigue, injuries or indifference, the end result was some lackluster play from a few players. On the other hand there were four players who clearly were ready to take it to their opponent in this critical event. Among the players who shone were Philipp Kohlschreiber, Michael Llodra, Ernests Gulbis and Ivan Ljubicic. These four competitors not only maintained their focus, but enjoyed their time playing as well. Then again serving 60%+ first serve with their serves and you would be happy too.
The opponents of Kohlschreiber, Llodra, Gulbis and Ljubicic faced an uphill battle. Unable to dent their opponents serve, they then struggled to hold their own serves with much efficiency. The weather was not a factor, nor the crowd in any of the day’s encounters, just the man across the net. Below are some links to videos taken March 12, 2009.
