Masters Series Indian Wells tournament director Steve Simon made no secret about his excitement over the BNP Paribas Open draw, even calling it "better than a Grand Slam."
"This sucker is loaded," tournament director Steve Simon raved when he saw the draw for the Masters Series Indian Wells. "There's no place to hide. It's better than a Grand Slam field. They're all here."
Just about. Every single one of the top 20 players is in the BNP Paribas Open field, and 43 of the top 44.
"It's amazing how well-balanced this is," Simon added. "Not one half is overly loaded and that's great. Just look at the depth of the field.
"First-round matches are amazing. That (Sam) Querrey-(Guillermo) Cañas match jumped right out. It's going to be so competitive, and that's what you dream of. No one gets a day off. It's going to be compelling tennis."
Other "amazing" first-rounders to which Simon is alluding probably include Ivan Ljubcic vs. Kei Nishikori, Julien Benneteau vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber, Michael Llodra vs. Feliciano Lopez, and Mikhail Youzhny vs. Viktor Troicki.
