  • Moodie reveals financial side of Davis Cup

Moodie reveals financial side of Davis Cup Dissatisfied South African Wesley Moodie says the Bryan brothers would not bother to play for the amount of money he was offered for Davis Cup by the South African federation.

The doubles player, whose singles ranking stands outside the Top 500, said that cash is on the line for the modern pro when it comes to Davis participation.

Moodie told South African weekly Rapport that he didn't play for his country last weekend for the price of a business class ticket, which the federation would not provide. He added that the father of the Byran Brothers fell over laughing when Moodie told him the modest amount involved.

"He laughed when I told him and he said that Bob and Mike would never play Davis Cup for the USA for so little," said Moody. "Not even the Americans are patriotic enough to play for their country without good financial reward."

Players may make patriotic noises when Davis Cup weeks come around, but in the end it's all about the money - cash in pocket.

"Unfortunately, the success of my career is solely determined by the ATP Tour and Grand Slams," said Moodie. "That is where my primary source of income lies and that is where I have to strive to succeed.

"Call me unpatriotic and self-centered... I apologize. I love South Africa but I can't make a living by playing for my country."
