After weeks of speculation that Roger Federer would hire Darren Cahill as his coach, Federer's agent has confirmed that the two will work together at this week's Masters Series Indian Wells.
Rumors of a partnership between world No. 2 Roger Federer and esteemed ATP coach (turned commentator) Darren Cahill have been running rampant for months, if not years. Those rumors heated up last month during Federer's training stint with Cahill in Dubai while the Swiss rested a lingering back injury.
On Tuesday, speculation was confirmed by Federer's agent, Tony Godsick. "It is a test for both," he explained. "One cannot yet say whether it will be something long term. They'll work together now and see how it works out.
"The two have long had a great respect for each other - It was occasionally discussed - now that Roger's had a break, anyway, because of his back, the timing was perfect for the test. Although they know and respect each other it could be that their personalities do not match."
While the duration of the partnership is unknown, it will begin this week in Indian Wells, where the first Masters Series event of 2009 is set to begin on Thursday.
Federer had previously worked with Tony Roche, mostly for clay-court help, but they parted in 2007. Federer has not had a full-time coach since splitting with Peter Lundgren six years ago.
Cahill has already mentored two previous world No. 1 players, Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi. While commentating for ESPN earlier this year at the Australian Open, both Cahill and Patrick McEnroe suggested Federer needed a coach after the 13-time Grand Slam champion went down to Rafael Nadal in the final.

Yep, great decision by Federer. He needs to go ahead and say right now that this is more than an interim thing. Needs to be full-time.

It's going to be very interesting to see how this pans out. It's going to be a learning experience for both Roger and Cahill.

Federer's agent apparently spoke too soon. Reports are that Cahill-Federer not happening.
Stay tuned. Federer is scheduled to give a press conference in Indian Wells this evening....

^ yep, Cahill has travelling issues considering that his family is in Vegas. He isnt willing to work for 20 + weeks accorrding to Godsick.Sad,but good that Roger gave it a go.

Sad. Important new perspective needed. Maybe someone else will/can become available?

Something from Cahill here-"With Roger being European and all those away weeks and the kids entrenched in school here in Las Vegas ? the reality really hit in Dubai," Cahill said in a telephone interview. "It was 100 percent that. We couldn't get past that practical hurdle. Roger is an absolutely class act. I told him on Sunday, and it was a difficult decision, but I just couldn't do it. It's getting tougher and tougher for me pack the bags and leave the kids at this stage."

IMO, traveling and being away from his family might be a good excuse , but not quite. If he REALLY believe he CAN make a DIFFERENCE in FED"S game he would go for it. IT's part of a coach's job to travel with his "player"... there's not much to pack if you're a sports person either. He probably, AT THIS STAGE, is still not CONVINCE that he can save and redirect FED's downhill destination. JUST my opinion!

Yep, it's not happening. Federer confirmed it today in Indian Wells.

I don't see anything wrong with a man putting his family priorities first. I'm sure Cahill probably would have liked to but he chose his family over Roger. 10-15 years from now, would he still be coaching Roger? Most likely not, but 10-15 years from now his family will still be there for him.
fan4tennis , 3/12/09 1:56 AM
Yeah, right... let's make ourselves believe that "it" was the reason why he declined the job.
With Fed's $$$, he can bring his family wherever, or see them for as often as he wish for while coaching the great Roger... for as long as he can MAKE HIM BE #1 again.... no price for that honor. BUT, there is that BIG DOUBT if it's as easy as before... there's a bunch of towering hurdles along the way... RAFA....NADAL...rafael to name a few!!!
agf25agf , 3/12/09 2:14 AM
agf25agt you're really delusional. People don't just move their family around if it can be helped. As for coaching Roger "full time"? Obviously if he could visit his family as often as he wish he would be compromising his coaching duties! Come-on! You think people are STUPID! The only "Big Doubt" is in your head! How does the saying go? "Better to be thought a fool, than to be known as one!" LOL
sky , 3/12/09 4:25 AM
SKY--- I've been "sober" for quite a while now. You're showing your anger VERY VERY WELL!
Have you ever thought( IF YOU HAVE SOME BRAINS LEFT IN THERE) that he's been asked this job long before he started to "TRY" coaching FED for a short period of time? THEREFORE, he would have considered so many things and, for sure, is not as STUPID as you, that he doesn't KNOW the demands of being a coach , much MORE to the "best" (supposedly) player tennis has ever had.
So, if his #1 priority is his family, then, he shouldn't have given the impression that he CAN or WILL BE ABLE to do the job regardless of any circumstances.
It's good that you stated that saying so well because you need to write it on your forehead so it will will remind you every minute of your existence that you MUST think about what you're going to say before you open your stinking mouth!
agf25agf , 3/12/09 11:27 AM
LOL have you ever thought that when you have a family, sometimes major decisions are made with the family, and not just with yourself? Have you ever thought that no matter what any of us think there are always other posibilities? Cahill not going full time with Federer may be a positive! Many things are possible. The difference between you and I is that you appear looking at things from a negative point of you, whereas I choose something more positive. The average 16 hrs and 19 min flight from Las Vegas to Dubai, may have been a rude awakening/reminder to both Cahill and his young family and it hit home "real" hard. Sure Cahill is much aware of travelling times... More than likely his wife decided for him. I want you home! Come back to me. It was as simple as that. As for the impression you speak of. Think about it! Sounds more like a press fabrication than anything. Cahill and Fed got together for the short term. Feds' agent mentioned that it was a test possibly more... (wishful thinking on his part). Why would he not think of, and even want such a thing, when most of us believe Darren Cahill would be the best thing that could happen to Federer. One can also say that just because a lot of us thinK Cahill would be best for the Fed, this in itself does not necessarily, or would not necessrily made it so. Perhaps the Fed (at least for the moment) will be better off on his own. I hope so for his sake and for those of us who like him best. Cheers

agf - do you know if roger cried when cahill said no? just wondering...
remi , 3/12/09 3:51 PM
Mocking crying is what little kids do. Grow up
orion , 3/12/09 9:27 PM
agf, can u be more childish and unclassy?
torres9 , 3/12/09 10:40 PM
I KNEW IT, I'm expecting the old familiar faces to react after I give a "pinch" to the FED/CAHILL issue. And why am I not surprise that YOU(?) will poke your nose again to stir some argument!
remi- I wish to speculate but it will regarded as a mortal sin by the same group of "worshipers".
sky- the story is not a 'TV soap' where those "DRAMAs" often occur. "More than likely his wife decided for him"...THIS IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS thing I've heard on this forum. Cahill then should let his WIFE do the coaching! She might be more EFFECTIVE than her husband.
Look at you...why are you making yourselves sound so naive?
torres9- don't make me expose what's inside that hollowed head of yours. Don't your parents taught you that it's impolite to enter into a conversation that you're not a part of?...SHUT UP!
agf25agf , 3/13/09 1:36 AM
orion: Mocking crying is what little kids do. Grow up
So is wishing Rafa will bust his knees or chop his head off by accident - but being a fellow Fed fan of these kids, you'r eblinded by your bias. GROW UP!
agf - are you having as much fun as I am?? :)
remi , 3/13/09 3:26 AM
remi-- DEFINITELY! These "children" are living up to their mental capacity!
agf25agf , 3/13/09 6:05 AM
Im not a fan of roger remi and I never said I hope rafa will bust his knees. If youre going to respond to me, refer to my actions not other people's.
orion , 3/13/09 2:59 PM
Sad to hear it didn't work out, but family comes first in my book, and I'm sure Roger would expect nothing less. Cahill is a class act.
