After winning singles rubbers on Friday, Croatia's Mario Ancic and Marin Cilic prevail in doubles on Saturday to eliminate Chile and advance to the quarterfinals of the 2009 Davis Cup.
Sunday's reverse singles in the Croatia vs. Chile opening-round Davis Cup tie features two dead rubbers after the host Croats blanked the underdog Chileans 3-0.
Mario Ancic and Marin Cilic gave Croatia a 2-0 lead on Friday with a pair of straight-set victories. Ancic and Cilic then teamed up for the doubles rubber on Saturday and defeated Nicolas Massu and Paul Capdeville 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Massu went down to Ancic in the tie's opening singles rubber, while Capdeville fell to Cilic.
Croatia advances to the quarterfinals, where it will take on either the United States or Switzerland. The host United States currently leads Switzerland 2-1 heading into Sunday's singles rubbers. "Croatia can go far," Ancic said. "I hope we will (be) an even better team for the quarterfinal match."
"The last couple of years we had injury problems; Ancic was out with illness," added Croatian captain Goran Prpic. "Finally we are all here, and ready to play. Everybody expected us to win, so sometimes it's not easy to do it. But we really played well."
Ivo Karlovic and Roko Karanusic will get to play on Sunday since both singles rubbers are dead. Massu and Capdeville are still on the schedule for Chile.
