The Russian Davis Cup team travels to Romania to take on Victor Hanescu and company. Veteran Marat Safin will take on Victor Crivoi and Mikhail Youzhny will battle Hanescu.
Marat Safin vs. Victor Crivoi
Even under the best of circumstances, Safin is unpredictable. The Russian is ranked 25th in the world – largely on the surprising success he enjoyed at Wimbledon last year, where he reached the semifinals. Since Crivoi is ranked No. 123, Safin is the obvious favorite on paper, but the Russian has already lost to 78th-ranked Arnaud Clement this year. Ordinarily, Crivoi would have a fighting chance – but not in Davis Cup. Safin is often at his very best when he is playing for his country. The Russian in four sets.
Mikhail Youzhny vs. Victor Hanescu
Youzhny has struggled mightily in the past year. Just last January, the Russian was ranked No. 8 in the world. He has now fallen all the way to 60th – mostly due to a serious dip in form. Hanescu outranks his opponent by 21 spots. Hanescu is a big server and the carpet on which they are playing can only help the Romanian. Youzhny, however, has picked up the pace of late. He made two quarterfinals in a row (Rotterdam and Marseille), but he was ousted in the first round of the Australian Open by Stefan Koubek of Austria. Youzhny might have some chances, but in the end the crowd support and the lightning quick surface should help Hanescu pocket a win for Romania.
