A virus will sideline David Nalbandian from this weekend's Davis Cup tie between Argentina and the Netherlands. Juan Martin Del Potro has been targeted as a possible replacement.
David Nalbandian has been ruled out Argentina's opening-round Davis Cup tie against the Netherlands due to a virus. "Physically, Nalbandian is not in a condition to play," Argentine captain Modesto Vazquez said.
Top 10 player Juan Martin Del Potro, who previously said he did not want to make a transition to clay in between a stretch of hard-court tournaments, is a possible replacement. "This is an emergency situation and obviously it's in the plans to call Del Potro,'' Vazquez explained. "We have to decide quickly who will replace Nalbandian and we're going to evaluate who is the best.''
This weekend's tie, hosted by Argentina, will be played on the clay courts of Buenos Aires in Parque Roca Stadium.
Jose Acasuso, who played on clay throughout February in South America and Mexico, is also a candidate to replace Nalbandian. Both Acasuso and Del Potro participated in last year's championship tie, in which the host Argentines were upset by a Spanish team that did not have Rafael Nadal. Acasuso lost the clinching singles rubber to Fernando Verdasco in five sets.
Nalbandian, meanwhile, went down to Daniel Koellerer in a shocking first-round upset at last week's ATP 500 event in Acapulco.

*sigh* More injury news? :(
I haven't seen David Nalbandian play since he was kicking over Evion water coolers over in the Aussi Open 2009!
Doesn't sound like he was doing better after that match either...
A virus huh? Yup, I bet it's the "over-worked athlete" virus, same as Andy Murray.
Get well soon David Nalbandian.

The really worrying thing is it's just the start of the season. rumours in the British press are that Andy M has mono. However he put in such a tremendous effort last year, I wonder if this lowered his resistance.

*sigh* Your absolutely right Deuce, it is worrying. These players are on such high demand.
I don't like rumors, especially bad ones, so I choose to ignore the glandular fever rumor until it's officially confirmed.
Take care everybody, and maintain being healthy :)
