Russia’s Evgeny Korolev downed Christophe Rochus to advance to the final of Delray Beach.
Korolev has never made an ATP tour final before. In fact, the 20-year-old has been forced to qualify for just about every tournament he has entered this year. He made the main draw in Zagreb, where he won his first-round match against Austria’s Jurgen Melzer, but his ranking (No. 105) has not been high enough to get him into the main draw on a regular basis. He has enjoyed the best results of his career this week.
Christophe Rochus has played well for the past few weeks. The Belgian preceded this semifinal appearance with a quarterfinal last week in Memphis. Unfortunately for Rochus, no hint of the player that took out American Sam Querrey remained in Saturday’s match. Rochus was lethargic and full of unforced errors for the entire match.
The single bright spot for the Belgian came when Korolev attempted to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second set. The Russian, who had played a solid match until that point, tightened up to give Rochus the break. To his credit, the youngster pulled himself together and proceeded to get another break at 5-5; he did not make another mistake, taking the win.
Korolev, who had to qualify for the tournament, will play top seed Mardy Fish in Sunday’s final.

Korolev.... Interesting, he has talent, but maybe too much of a desire to have a crack at every ball regardless of his position on court.

Haha Deuce, there is a resemblance between them. Speaking of resemblance, don't you think Amer Delic looks like Roger Federer? There was also a player at the Aussie Open, who's name I can't remember, who resembled Marat Safin. It's so funny because we were watching the match with the Marat-look-alike, when they suddenly switched to a match where the actual Marat was playing. I remember telling my mom "See?! Doesn't he look like Marat?" and my mom stopped to look, and then fell out laughing claiming that she thought she was watching Marat all along during the sit down...I remember the Marat look-alike lost to Roger Federer. I'll look his name up.
Anywayz, congrats to Korolev on his positive results.
But, Mardy Fish, you better win this one. There is no excuse, you're the top seed, he's a qualifier, your on good form. I expect for you to be the winner.
Does anyone know if he will be on the David Cup team vs. the Swiss. I'm not sure if he will take the place of an injured James Blake?

Fish won.
But he will not be on the U.S. Davis Cup team for this tie.

Okie, thanks Ricky!
Congrats to Mardy Fish. What was the score?
I take it that James Blake will be in action for team USA then?
MiniArbre , 3/1/09 11:56 PM
Hey Ricky,
So do they think James will be ready for Davis Cup? If not, will it be Querry??
And, what in the world is going on with Robbie Ginepri? I have always liked him, but...

samprallica: interesting what u say about Korolev because Gulbis, whom I think has a gr8 talent and this time last year would've predicted he'd be making inroads into top 10, does exactly the same and has had a very disappointing year.
miniArbre: know who you mean, agree!

Well Korolev hasn't exactly been setting the world on fire either. This is a better result than Gulbis has ever had (other than QF at the French Open), but the Delray draw was borderline terrible. Who was the best player Korolev beat?
The bottom line is both Gulbis and Korolev need to get a heck of a lot smarter about constructing points (among other improvements, mostly mental), before they can start even thinking about reaching the top.

Delic indeed looked a bit like Federer.
And Amen to Ricky's last comment.
samprallica , 3/2/09 8:09 PM
Hi Ricky, I wanted to ask you if Gulbis' coach or Korelov's, had coached anyone before whose done really well, i.e. top 20. Thankx.
