Japan is known for cutting-edge tech, but the country's top player Kei Nishikori has been told to tame his mobile phone during matches.
The world No. 93 got a warning to leave his mobile in the locker room during this weekend's home Davis Cup clash with China.
The teenager drew the wrath of the chair after his gadget kept up its bleeping during a loss in Memphis on the ATP World Tour. And the distraction issue was quickly picked up by Japanese Davis officials half a world away.
"He'll have to be very careful about his mobile phone," the country's Davis Cup coach told local media. "I'll be warning him about that just to be on the safe side."
Nishikori inadvertently left his mobile in his jacket pocket during a match and had to put up with its noise-making throughout.
While no one is telling the teenager to turn off his widget, suggestions are still being made that he should at least switch it to vibrating mode only during matches.
Nishikori will be making a rare trip home for Davis Cup from his base in Florida, with Japan seeking to return to the World Group for the first time in nearly a quarter of a century.
