An in-form Gael Monfils reached the finals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel after defeating Jose Acasuso Friday night.
Second seed Monfils started the match quickly, snagging a service break in the opening game of the match. The Frenchman jumped out to a 3-0 lead, showcasing his speed and powerful ground strokes in front of a capacity crowd in Acapulco. The 22-year-old served well throughout set one, winning 17 of 19 first-serve points. Monfils served his way out of trouble, saving two break points at 5-3, striking an ace on his third set point of the set.
Fifth seed Acasuso fell behind early once more, surrendering his first service game of the second set. The Argentine played the big points poorly, failing to convert a break point chance in the following game at 0-1. An agitated Acasuso offered little resistance to the offensive attack of the Frenchman, making 29 unforced errors along the way. Monfils continued to serve well, again capturing 17 of 19 points on first serve. The Frenchman reached 5-4 behind two consecutive love service games, hitting his 11th ace on his third match-point opportunity.
Monfils faces defending champion Nicolas Almagro in the final on Saturday night. The Spaniard won his semifinal matchup with Martin Vassallo Arguello on Friday evening.
