Nicolas Almagro reaches his second consecutive final at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel after defeating Martin Vassallo Arguello on Friday evening.
Fourth seed and 2008 champion Almagro moved safely into the final round in Acapulco following a straight-set victory over unseeded Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello. The world No. 21 extended his lead to a perfect 5-0 in the head-to-head series.
Almagro secured a service break at 1-1 in the first set behind his big forehand. Despite a dismal 36% of first serves in, the Spaniard managed to hold five of five service games, saving both break points against him. Almagro survived a tough consolidation game to lead 3-1, holding serve for the remainder of the set.
Vassallo Arguello, who has never taken a set from Almagro, failed to convert an early break point in the second set. The Argentine dropped his level of play at 2-2, giving the Spaniard a second break in the match. The Spaniard struck a costly double-fault in the eighth game of the set, handing Vassallo Arguello a critical break point. Vassallo Arguello captured his first and only break of the Almagro serve, bringing the match to parity at 4-4. Almagro, aided by a trio of unforced errors by the Argentine, snagged a break of serve in the following game to retake the lead, 5-4. Almagro, continuing to serve well, hit two aces in the 10th game, his sixth coming on match point.
Almagro awaits the winner of the Monfils/Acasuso match to be played late Friday night.
