Acapulco - Almagro, Acasuso secure semifinal berths Seeds Nicolas Almagro and Jose Acasuso reached the final four at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco. The two won their quarterfinal round contests on Thursday.

    Nicolas Almagro def. Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 7-6

Defending champion Nicolas Almagro booked a place in the final four at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, defeating compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the quarterfinal round on Thursday afternoon. Almagro looked to breeze through the contest, pocketing a 25-minute set behind two breaks of serve. The second seed dropped his level of play in the second, but raced to a 6-0 lead in the second-set tiebreak. The world No. 21 turned in a very solid performance on serve for the day, striking 14 aces in the match. Almagro never faced a break point during the match, winning 92% of his first service points. The Spaniard will meet Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello in the semifinals.

Jose Acasuso def. Tommy Robredo 7-5, 6-2

Fifth seed Jose Acasuso secured a semifinals spot in Acapulco on Thursday, dismissing second seed Tommy Robredo in the quarterfinals. The Argentine and the Spaniard met for the fourth time in as many weeks on the South American clay. Acasuso, world No. 43, came into the quarterfinals 1-2 against the world No. 15 for 2009, having lost two consecutive semifinal matches at Costa do Sauipe and Buenos Aires. A steady Acasuso snapped a red-hot Robredo’s 12-match winning streak, converting three of seven break-point chances and winning 79% of his first-serve points. Acasuso took advantage of an uncharacteristically flat Robredo, capturing critical service breaks at 6-5 in the first set and 3-2 in the second. The Argentine held 10 out of 10 service games, saving the only break point he faced in the match. Acasuso awaits the winner of the Monfils/Mayer quarterfinal late Thursday night.
