An erratic Gael Monfils booked a spot in the semifinals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel after unseeded Argentine Leonardo Mayer retired with cramping issues.
The second seed, making his debut in Acapulco this week, struggled to win the big points, converting just two of 11 break point chances in the match. The Frenchman managed to capture a critical service break in a marathon eighth game of the first set, closing it out 6-3.
Monfils lost his way in the second set, failing to convert five break-point opportunities. The world No. 10 quickly fell behind 3-6 in the second-set tiebreak, handing set two to the Argentine on a costly double-fault. A fatigued Mayer, cramping at the beginning of the third set, surrendered his first service game at love. Monfils extended his lead to 3-1, securing a place among the final four following Mayer’s retirement.
The Frenchman will face fifth seed Jose Acasuso in the semifinals on Friday. The Argentine scored a straight-set quarterfinal victory over Spaniard Tommy Robredo on Thursday afternoon.
