David Ferrer rolls over Philipp Kohlschreiber and into the Dubai quarterfinals on Wednesday. Ferrer also sends much-publicized Israeli Andy Ram crashing out of the doubles event.
David Ferrer destroyed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the Barclays Tennis Championships on Wednesday afternoon. Ferrer needed just one hour and 17 minutes to set up a quarterfinal meeting with one of two Russians; either Dmitry Tursunov or Igor Andreev.
Kohlschreiber had crushed Ferrer four months ago at the Masters Series Paris to even their head-to-head series at three wins apiece, but a much different outcome in Dubai was never in doubt. One break of serve was enough for the Spaniard in set one, as he fired four aces, put in 71 percent of his first serves, and won 18 of 22 first serve points.
Ferrer's dominance on serve continued throughout the second frame of play. The No. 4 seed, who saved two break points in the first, saved another in the second to make his two additional second-set breaks hold up. Ferrer made 80 percent of his first serves in the second and jumped all over his opponent's second-serve deliveries to dominated the second 6-2.
Ferrer also teamed up in doubles with Marat Safin to defeat the news-making Andy Ram on Wednesday. Ram, from Israel, was allowed to play in the event one week after Shahar Peer was banned from the women's tournament. Ferrer and Safin ousted Ram and Kevin Ullyett 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 (super-tiebreaker).
Safin, meanwhile, went out in the first round of singles to Richard Gasquet in three sets. Ferrer is 3-3 lifetime against Andreev and has never faced Tursunov.
