David Nalbandian suffered a shock first-round upset to Austrian qualifier Daniel Koellerer at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel on Tuesday.
Top seed Nalbandian, the 2008 runner-up in Acapulco, was dispatched in three sets Tuesday night, losing his opening-round match to the unheralded Koellerer, ranked No. 116 in the world. The world No. 12 looked poised to secure a quick victory, winning an easy first set 6-1, but failed to control his unforced error count as the match progressed. An uninspired Nalbandian turned in a poor serving day, winning just 57% of his first-serve points and striking five double-faults. The top seed dropped serve five times during the match, capitalizing on just five of 13 break-point opportunities.
The 27-year-old Argentine dropped two ranking spots this week, unable to defend his championship points in Buenos Aires a week ago. Since winning his 10th career title Sydney this January, the former world No. 3 has struggled to find consistent form in 2009. Nalbandian bounced out of the Australian Open early, losing to unseeded Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei in the second round.
