Tournament seeds Nicolas Almagro and Gael Monfils posted first-round victories at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel on Tuesday.
Nicolas Almagro def. Santiago Gonzalez 6-4, 6-2
Fourth seed and defending champion Nicolas Almagro needed just over an hour to dismiss Mexican wildcard Santiago Gonzalez in his opening-round match. The Spaniard, who never faced a break point during the match, converted three of eight break point chances during the encounter. The world No. 21 turned in a strong serving day, winning 85% of his first-serve points. Almagro looks to recover from a shock first-round loss in Buenos Aires last week. The Spaniard takes on Potito Starace of Italy in the second round.
Gael Monfils def. Olivier Patience 7-6, 6-4
Second seed Gael Monfils prevailed in a first-round all-French contest, dismissing compatriot Olivier Patience in straight sets. Monfils survived a break of serve and a highly contested tiebreak, taking the critical first set seven points to four. The world No. 10 struck 17 aces on Tuesday, capturing all but one of 32 first-serve points. The 22-year-old Frenchman cracked the top 10 for the first time last week after strong semifinal performances in Doha and Rotterdam. Monfils will take the court against Brazilian clay-court talent Thomaz Bellucci in round two.
