American Sam Querrey got off to a good start in Delray Beach with a victory over crafty veteran Argentine Guillermo Canas.
Sam Querrey has begun 2009 impressively. He had an unfortunate result in Melbourne, drawing 34th-ranked Philipp Kohlschreiber in the opening round and losing in three sets. The American also lost in the opening round in Brisbane to Robin Soderling, but aside from those opening-round defeats were some encouraging results. He made his first final of the year in Auckland, then he had two consecutive quarterfinal appearances in San Jose and Memphis.
Canas showed a glimmer of his old self in the first set. The Argentine was able to break Querrey twice with his retrieving skills (though Querrey also returned the favor). The American was far stronger in the tiebreaker, as big servers often are, and Querrey took the set for the lead.
Querrey was much more efficient on serve in the second set. Canas got no more opportunities to break, as his opponent added another five aces to the eight he already fired. A single break of serve sealed the victory for Querrey. The American will take on Belgium’s Christophe Rochus in the second round.
With this loss, the once No. 8 ranked Canas goes to 1-5 for the year.
