Clay-court talents Albert Montanes and Thomaz Bellucci posted opening-round victories at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel on Monday.
Thomaz Bellucci def. Nicolas Devilder 3-6, 6-4, 6-4
Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci survived a first-round scare Monday afternoon, defeating Frenchman Nicolas Devilder in three hard-fought sets. A shaky Brazilian struggled to find his way throughout the match, surrendering serve on four occasions. Bellucci rallied from a set down, securing five of 18 break-point chances in two hours and 42 minutes. The 21-year-old Brazilian looks to improve upon a lackluster showing in Buenos Aires last week, having lost a round of 32 contest to Spaniard Marcel Granollers of Spain. Bellucci will play the winner of the Monfils/Patience match in the second round.
Albert Montanes def. Bruno Echagaray 6-1, 6-4
Sixth seed Montanes cruised to a straight-sets victory over Mexican wildcard Bruno Echagaray Monday night. The Spaniard made a strong showing in his opening round match, converting six out of seven break-point opportunities. The world No. 38 reached the finals of Acapulco in 2005, losing 6-1, 6-0 to countryman Rafael Nadal. Montanes battles compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver in round two. Gimeno-Traver won a tough, three-set contest against Nicolas Lapentti in the opening round.
