With Roger Federer's career hitting a brief lull and uber-coach Darren Cahill now at a loose end after leaving the Australian Davis Cup staff, speculation is growing that the elite pair would make a
perfect combination.
Federer stands at 13 Grand Slam titles as he tries to level the 14 of Pete Sampras. The 27-year-old Swiss has not played since losing a five-set final to Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open, which reduced him to tears during the trophy ceremony.
Federer withdrew--claiming a back injury--from next week's Barclays Championships in Dubai, where he has won four times, as well as the Davis Cup tie in Alabama with the US, all but dooming Switzerland's
chances.
Cahill formerly worked with Andre Agassi and has remained in Las Vegas for the past few years. He and Federer have a karmic connection through Cahill's hometown of Adeliade.
The 43-year-old was a childhood friend of Peter Carter, Federer's first coach who was tragically killed in a car accident in South Africa in 2002.
Super-confident world No. 2 Federer has also worked with Australian Tony Roche, and has always said he knew his game better than any coach could.

Good question, Emiliano. Is the buzz only because Cahill is available, or does someone have hard information? If the rumors are true, I think it could help Federer -- not so much with his game as with how to use his choices on the court. He can get a little passive sometimes, staying back when he should be attacking. As a Federer fan, I hope he can get some new insight from Cahill.

I would appreciate something a lot more concrete than mere "growing speculation". Where are the facts?! We require something more substantial. I don't feel that because there is a link of sort between Feds old coach (Carter) and this guy (Cahill) is enough. Hopefully you will/can come up with something more. Looking forward to a follow up story... What is the truth? As a Federer fan I wish him all the best. I enjoy watching his tennis playing the most. Why doesn't someone ask him what he is up to or comtemplating? Not sure the answer would be forthcoming, but it would be interesting for someone to ask. Cheers

I think it's speculation. There is another story on it:

But the same rumour emerged in 2007 too, and didn't happen. Unless Tennistalk has had a different source...

RickyDimon , 2/23/09 5:18 AM
sky - you could get on Fed's website & see if there's anything on there (sorry I haven't had time). Maybe leave a comment like "Fed, what gives?" :) Worth a try.....

Lammer wants to repay Federer's faith

Dubai: Michael Lammer is a guest of former world No 1 and four-time Dubai champion Roger Federer. And today, he wants to repay this hospitality to one of the world's best players by advancing "as far as possible" in the main draw of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships.
"Roger is a good friend and he has allowed me to stay at his apartment here. I hope I can compensate this gesture by going as far as possible in the main draw," Lammer told Gulf News after winning 6-1, 6-3 against Jonathan Dasnieresde Veigy of France yesterday.
"You cannot compare anyone to Roger, and I cannot replace him here. But I hope I will do well in the main competition," the Swiss said.
The 26-year-old is Federer's contemporary on court, seizing every opportunity to learn about tennis from his more gifted countryman.

"A player like Roger comes once in a lifetime. We've had some great sportspeople, but Martina (Hingis) and Roger definitely stand out. Roger is always there to help any of us any time. And besides, he is such a great friend too," Lammer said.
Switzerland received another bonus when Marco Chiudinelli went through 7-6 (1), 6-4 in his match against Paolo Lorenzi of Italy to make it two Swiss players in the main draw.
Currently ranked after 400, Chiudinelli made it to the qualifiers after receiving a wild card as the winner of the annual Aviation Cup, held at the end of the year.
Also advancing to the main draw of the competition were Laurent Recouderc with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Rik De Voest. Italy's Flavio Cipolla defeated Marsel Ilhan of Turkey 6-2, 6-4 to advance into the main competition, which starts at 2 pm today.

tenstar,
I just made a post regarding the fact that there never seems to be a legitimate source behind some of the posts on this site. I'm not sure why the mods keep on deleting my posts, as there are no obscenities to be found anywhere, and I'm merely bringing up a legitimate concern..

Scratch that... That post was to Ricky Dimon, not tenstar.

gr8 gesture Roger !!!!!!!! this is what Roger is all about !!!!& this why we love him!!!!!! gr8 post Janhavi.......

Yes a player like Roger is rare. It's hard to watch his videos and then watch other players' videos and not see the elegance this guy has that no one has ever had. Sampras and Nadal are just brutal sportmen which we see so much in many other sports. An artist which can succeed so much is hard to find.
torres9 , 2/24/09 8:41 AM
^^ You're right--for me,Roger provides something so special its just hard to put anyone else up there.Like Tony Roche said-Roger plays tennis the way it should be played( just an opinion). But I dont think Sampras's game was just about brute force.I wont say his game is like poetry in motion. But its certainly not about brute force.
janhavi , 2/24/09 10:25 AM
Hmmm. Janhavi, you're right about Federer being the smoothest of players.
But I think the Sampras serve, his gets on the run, his slam-dunk were as exciting as anything this sport has seen. As for Nadal, well, this guy certainly isn't about conventional tennis, but there is plenty of beauty in how he goes about with his game. I think his matches against Haas and Verdasco at the AO are good examples.
Granted, its all opinion.
samprallica , 2/24/09 10:39 AM
Sampras may not have been smooth. But IMO he still had this unique combination flair and power.
As for Nadal -I love his talent. And he's incredible .But the way he plays isnt perhaps my definition of beauty.
janhavi , 2/24/09 10:49 AM
Fully agreed. Nadal may not be aesthetically pleasing as Federer is (its still opinion), but his talent is incredible. That's the aspect in his game totally undervalued by many.
samprallica , 2/24/09 11:38 AM
So what's the verdict? Is this article a rumour? I read tenstar's link and in the search I also saw the 2007 article that covered the same rumour. Any Fed fans know anymore to share with us?
remi , 2/24/09 11:48 AM
^^ as of now its just a rumour.

If read ignore ...have faith on Roger............
for Fed fans..............
tomnjerry2 , 2/24/09 12:47 PM
How can Nadal be untalented if he can conquer tennis with his left hand when he is right-handed. That is talent. But Fed is a genius in shotmaking. Too many shots I could list down here which he has produced in so many occasions.
torres9 , 2/24/09 1:07 PM
pete sampras was a boring player with a lot of talent!
memi , 2/24/09 7:37 PM
do you have a source over this ? or is it something you just came up with ?
