Andy Roddick defeats Sam Querrey in three sets at the RMK Championships on Friday night. Next up for Roddick is a semifinal meeting with either Lleyton Hewitt or Christophe Rochus.
Andy Roddick survived a scare against Sam Querrey to reach the semifinals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory on Friday night. Roddick needed one hour and 43 minutes to set up a Saturday clash with either Lleyton Hewitt or Christophe Rochus.
In a matchup of two of the biggest servers in tennis, one break decided each set. Roddick's first one came midway through the opening set, and it proved to be enough for Roddick to take a one-set advantage. 81 percent serving in the first helped Roddick's efforts, and lost just six points in five service games without facing a break point.
A significant momentum shift took place with Roddick serving at 1-1 in the second. On his game point, the chair umpire overruled what would have been a game-ending Querrey error and instead called it a winner. After a theatrical complaining session, Roddick unraveled mentally and Querrey won the next two points for the break. A distraught Roddick could not get the break back, as his opponent blasted eight aces in set two.
"I don't feel like getting angry and paying someone," Roddick said when asked about the call.
Set three also featured a decisive break early in the proceedings. Roddick settled down in between sets and promptly won the next three games, including a huge break of serve at 1-0. Querrey had one 0-30 chance on Roddick's serve later in the set, but the No. 1 seed refused to allow Querrey a break point. Roddick put in 72 percent of his first serves in the third and held serve one final time 5-3 when Querrey netted a forehand to finish off the match.
Roddick is 2-0 lifetime against Rochus but has not played the 5'9'' Belgian since 2005. The sixth-ranked American is 3-6 against Hewitt. Those two veterans have not squared off since Roddick prevailed in a U.S. Open encounter back in 2006.
