Juan Monaco prevailed in an all-Argentine semifinal clash on Saturday, dismissing defending champion David Nalbandian in three hard-fought sets.
The World No. 67 battled back after losing the first set 6-2, converting three of 3 break chances in the second set. An uninspired Nalbandian, who struck 13 unforced errors in the second set, served for a spot in the finals at 5-4, but failed to close out the match. Monaco secured a second break of serve, leveling the match at 7-5.
The two traded service breaks in the final set, eventually reaching a third-set tie break. Monaco quickly jumped out to a 5-1 lead, taking full advantage of an error-prone Nalbandian. The 24-year-old, a dismal zero out of 4 sets played against Nalbandian in two previous tries, pocketed the match in two hours and 41 minutes.
Monaco, a Copa Telmex champion in 2007, will look to capture his fourth tour title on Sunday, his second in Buenos Aires. The former World No. 14 takes on third seed Tommy Robredo, who won his semifinal encounter with Jose Acasuso, 6-4, 7-6.
