Despite some periods of patchy play, Novak Djokovic safely moved into the quarterfinals in Marseille on Thursday.
Novak Djokovic was not at his hard court best in his 2 set defeat of Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic. Djokovic pocketed an early break, but some errant forehands and general sloppy play allowed Hernych to secure his own break of serve. With the set back on serve, Djokovic pressured the Czech man’s serve in the waning moments of the set to take another break and along with it the first set.
The second set played out similarly to the first. Djokovic was able to draw first blood to take the early lead. Once again, the Serb permitted Hernych back into the set with some loose points and he found himself back on serve when the Czech was able to convert. Also similar to the first set, Djokovic chose the tail end of the set to pressure and subsequently break Hernych’s serve.
Djokovic’s next opponent will be Mischa Zverev of Germany.
