    2/20/09 12:38 AM | Kelli DeMario
Buenos Aires - Acasuso, Monaco prevail at home Argentine talents Jose Acasuso and Juan Monaco successfully booked their spots in quarterfinals of the Copa Telmex on Thursday.

Juan Monaco def. Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-4, 2-6, 6-2

Juan Monaco survived a tough second-round encounter with fellow Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello on Thursday afternoon. The world No. 67 and 2007 Copa Telmex champion came through the grueling three-set match 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in two hours and 13 minutes. The 24-year-old Argentine struggled to convert opportunities on his compatriot’s serve, snagging four out of 14 break point chances. Monaco, who did not lose serve during a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Sergio Roitman in round one, lost serve three times in Thursday’s match. He will face Argentine qualifier Maximo Gonzalez in the quarterfinals. Gonzalez breezed through his second-round match against Argentine Brian Dabul, 6-3, 6-1.

Jose Acasuso def. Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-3

Fifth seed Jose Acasuso secured a place among the last eight in Buenos Aires, dismissing Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday evening. Acasuso has yet to drop a set in his 2009 campaign at home, posting a 6-2, 7-6 straight-set victory over Spanish qualifier Daniel Munoz-De La Nava in the opening round. The Argentine enjoyed a solid serving day, winning 10 out of 10 service games played. Acasuso reaches the quarterfinals for a seventh time at the Copa Telmex, finishing a runner-up in 2001 and 2008. The world No. 35 awaits the winner of the Junquiera/Hernandez match.
