Oscar Hernandez def. Nicolas Almagro 6-2, 1-6, 6-3
Second seed Nicolas Almagro suffered a shock upset to countryman Oscar Hernandez Tuesday afternoon. After losing the first set quickly, the Spaniard looked to regroup, bringing the match to parity behind two breaks of serve. The Spaniard failed to hold on in the third, dropping serve three times in the match. Almagro won only 44% of his second serve points. Hernandez will take on Argentine Diego Junquiera in the second round.
Maximo Gonzalez def. Carlos Moya 6-4, 6-4
Fourth seed Carlos Moya went down to Argentine qualifier Maximo Gonzalez in straight sets. The Spaniard, dropping serve four times in total, offered little resistance right from the first point. The former World No. 1 appeared listless, striking 23 unforced errors in the match. Gonzalez, continuing his solid clay-court form, held nine out of 10 service games. His next opponent will be compatriot Brian Dabul.
Daniel Gimeno-Traver def. Gaston Gaudio 6-2, 4-6, 6-2
World No. 87 Daniel Gimeno-Traver needed almost two hours to defeat former world No. 5 Gaston Gaudio Tuesday night. There were 11 breaks of serve in the match, seven going the way of the Spaniard. The Argentine, returning to action after a year plagued by injury, missed on nine of 13 break chances in the match. Gimeno-Traver faces top seed David Nalbandian in the next round.
