Novak Djokovic survived a tricky first-round test in France’s Jeremy Chardy on Wednesday in Marseille
Djokovic, Serbia’s highest ranked tennis player, looked crisp in his first post-Australian Open match. The 2008 Australian Open winner was unable to defend his title this year; he went out in the quarterfinals to American Andy Roddick. Though he had nearly a month off, Djokovic showed no signs of rust in his straight-set win over Chardy.
Chardy has had a good season in 2009 thus far; he was just unlucky to draw the top seed in Marseille as his first-round opponent. The Frenchman played well to open the match. He went toe to toe with Djokovic throughout the first set. Both men were so dominant on serve that there were no break-point chances. Djokovic’s experience came through in the tiebreaker. The Serb was able to secure an early mini-break and he never surrendered the lead.
Despite the enthusiastic crowd support, Chardy’s resolve waivered for the first time in the second set. Djokovic poured on the pressure to take an early break. Chardy got in some trouble in later games, but he held Djokovic to the single break. He had one chance at a break, but otherwise Chardy could not dent the serve of Djokvic.
Djokovic will meet Jan Hernych in the second round.
