Mikhail Youzhny scored an impressive win over Tomas Berdych on Monday in the first round of the Open 13 in Marseille.
Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic struggled with his return game all match long. Russian Mikhail Youzhny struck 10 aces, but otherwise he served at 47% for the match. Despite the low first-serve percentage, Youzhny faced just one break point for the entire match and that as he was serving the match out.
Berdych is the higher ranked of the two men--24 in the world to Youzhny’s 62--but Monday’s match made it appear the other way around. So comfortable was the Russian on his serve that even when he lost the second-set tiebreaker at 2, he never seemed in danger of losing the match. Berdych seemed to feel the same. After winning the second set, the Czech’s game fell apart.
Youzhny was able to break Berdych twice in the third, and as he had in the first two sets, the Russian navigated the entire third set without a break point against him--until the last game of the match. Youzhny advances to the second round, where he will play the winner of the match between Andreas Seppi and Jerzy Janowicz.
