Defending champion David Nalbandian survived a water-logged Monday at the Copa Telmex. The top seed won a 72-minute opening round match against Nicolas Lapentti.
Nalbandian made a strong start at home, defeating Lapentti in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-3. The Argentine extended his record in the head to head series to 4-0. Nalbandian looks to capture his eleventh title overall this week, his second in Buenos Aires. He won the 2008 Buenos Aires championship, dismissing compatriot Jose Acasuso in the final.
The No. 1 seed enjoyed a solid serving day, hitting three aces and winning an impressive 81% of his first service points. Lapentti struggled to win points on second serve, giving Nalbandian a key break of serve at 5-3 in the first set.
Nalbandian worked quickly in the second set, securing a service break at 2-1. The Argentine surrendered serve in the following game, allowing Lapentti to bring the match to parity at 3-2. The Ecuadorian, broken while serving at 3-4, failed to improve his second service percentage. Lapentti won a dismal five of 12 second serve points in set two. Behind his solid play from the back of the court, Nalbandian pocketed the second set 6-3.
