Australian Chris Guccione has hit the road in the US with experienced coach Peter McNamara in charge as the youngster works to improve a dismal ranking of 132.
Australian tennis remains in crisis as memories of last month's Open in Melbourne begin their annual fade from the mind of sporting public.
But with no Aussie in the ATP Top 100, the race is on between Guccione and No. 107 Davis Cup teammate Lleyton Hewitt to restore some national pride.
Guccione's ranking has crashed over the past nine months as the 23-year-old tried to go it alone. Mac, once part of the Wimbledon-winning doubles pair of Mcnamara and McNamee, is working for at least a few months with his new charge.
Traveling in Europe and the States will not be much of a strain for the Germany-based coach, who once tried to save the career of Mark Philippoussis four years ago.
Guccione reportedly wanted to poach Hewitt's former mentor Roger Rasheed from Frenchman Gael Monfils, but that plan became a non-starter when Rasheed voted to stay put.
