Greg Rusedski could be quietly winding down his ill-conceived campaign to return to tennis at age 35 through the generosity of tournament wild cards.
The Canadian-turned-Brit may have overestimated his marquee value among organizers, with reports from London hinting that the plan will be quietly allowed to die.
So far, the one-time No. 4 has been unable to make a breakthrough on the free entry front and might have to drop his sights down to the entry-level Challenger level once again if he wants to for some reason play again.
The two-time Grand Slam finalist had been hoping to take a place on the British Davis Cup team, which will play the Ukraine March 6-8 in Scotland, but that idea was quickly knocked on the head by captain John Lloyd.
Rusedski's problem seem to be the fact that he is not really a household name. "If Pete Sampras was seriously trying to come back, then it would be different," said Rotterdam boss Richard Krajicek. "Then again, Pete Sampras is Pete Sampras."
Murray was reportedly denied a wild card at this week's Marseille event, with the free places going to French players and the ever-popular Marat Safin.
